Ercolano is a town in the City of Naples which lies at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius. This city was once a renowned playground for some of the richest Roman citizens during the summer vacations.
The Archeological site of Herculaneum is situated in Ercolano.

Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was destroyed by an earthquake in AD 62, the AD 79 eruption of Mt Vesuvius saw it submerged in a 16m-thick sea of mud that essentially fossilised the city.
This meant that even delicate items, such as furniture and clothing, were discovered remarkably well preserved. Tragically, the inhabitants didn’t fare so well; thousands of people tried to escape by boat but were suffocated by the volcano’s poisonous gases.

What appears to be a moat around the town is in fact the ancient shoreline. It was here in 1980 that archaeologists discovered some 300 skeletons, the remains of a crowd that had fled to the beach only to be overcome by the terrible heat of clouds surging down from Vesuvius.

Tips
Preparation for Visit: Good and comfortable walking shoes, Hat, Sunblock, Water, Energy bar and Camera. Best to place all in small daypacks. 25L backpacks or larger are not permitted onto the Herculaneum Archaeological site. You can deposit the bags at a concierge.
How to get there: Ercolano Scavi is the closest train station – 10mins walk through Via IV Novembre to Corso Resina. Entrance to Herculaneum Ruins is situated across the road.
Entrance Fees: EUR10,00 (without Pompeii Card).
Amenities: The restaurant/cafe at Herculaneum Ruins are either seldom open even during peak tourist season. Not worth risking going without water especially there are very few covered areas onsite.
WARNING: Avoid hiring any audio guide as the attendants tend to keep your ID, Credit Card or Passport until Audio Guide is returned.
Personally, the size of this Archeological site is nowhere compared to that of Pompeii. At most it takes about half a day to wander through the ruins. Therefore, it may not be necessary to stay overnight in Ercolano.
