Civita di Bagnoregio

Heard of or been to this village?

Civita di Bagnoregio is a hilltop village in the Viterbo province of Italy. It consists of two villages connected by a footbridge, with Civita di Bagnoregio only accessible from Bagnoregio via this bridge.

Some of my friends might wonder why I chose Civita—was it the lack of Wi-Fi or promising boredom? Reviews call it a sleepy village with not much going on, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder! If you’re into gazing at walls or counting sheep, then buckle up, because Civita is the place for you!

Civita di Bagnoregio is a quirky hilltop village that seems to have come straight out of a medieval storybook. It’s slowly eroding like a soap bubble, but that adds to its charm. Who wouldn’t want to visit a place that might slide down the hill any minute? Talk about an adventure!

Traveling to Bagnoregio

We left our luggage in Florence and took a train to Orvieto, carrying just overnight backpacks for our 1-day stay in Civita di Bagnoregio.

Buses to Civita operate from various areas, and we chose Orvieto since we were familiar with it from previous visits.

How to get to Bagnoregio from Orvieto: The bus is operated by Cotral S.p.A and each journey is EUR2,00. Orvieto railway station is the second stop for the bus to Bagnoregio village. For updated information, click to link to Cotral’s official site. The bus will drop off at Via Giuseppe Garibaldi in Bagnoregio village. From here approximately 21mins or 1.5km walk to the Civita di Bagnoregio Ticket stand.

Do not worry that this is going to be a boring walk. The walk through Piazza Cavour will bring you past cafes, Bed and Breakfast establishments, monuments and churches.

There are two ways down to the footbridge – the 10mins monotonous walk along Via Bonaventura Tecchi or taking the stairways from the Observation site Terrazza su Civita di Bagnoregio. One point to note about taking the stairways is that the stairs are quite steep. Keep your eyes on the stairs not the view as you navigate to Via Bonaventura Tecchi.

    1. Thank you for your comment. It would be appreciated that in posting this, you also post your doubts rather than leave it as an opened-ended. Kind regards
