Churches in the surrounding

Mosterio da Serra do Pilar, a former monastery dating to the 1500s, has been noted for its round church. This former monastery is by the scenic spot, Miradouro da Serra do Pilar which provides a breathtaking view of the Douro River and Porto.

How to get there:  From Jardim do Morro station stroll towards the City Centre of Vila Nova de Gaia and turn left into R. de Rodrigues de Freitas and up the tiled slope of Rampa do Infante Santo to come face to face with the monastery. The doors were locked when I got there.

Porto Cathedral is a 12th-century religious site and one of the city’s oldest monuments, is situated on a hilltop with the interior looking like a fortress. The walls of the compound of this magnificent cathedral is beautifully decorated with blue and white tiles depicting stories.

How to get there: Approximately 10minutes walk from Luis I Bridge along Av. Vimara Peres and turning left onto a Calcada de Vandoma up a tiled slope opposite Statue of Vimara Peres. Free to enter cathedral. Approximately Eur3,00 per person to access the cloister, chamber rooms and treasure room. No restrictions to photography.

Church of Saint Ildefonoso (Igreja Paroquial de Santo Ildefonso) is an elegant 18th century church where the entrance to the building is at the top of a flight of steps behind sturdy gates.

Igreja da Santíssima Trindade, built in the 19th century, has one of the grandest interior of churches in Porto.

How to get there: Church situated at Rua da Trindade 115, 4000-200 Porto. Trindade is the nearest Porto metro station. No Entry fees.

Capela das Almas (Chapel of Souls) was my last stop. The beauty of the exterior of the church is jaw-dropping – decorated with scenes from the lives of saints.

How to get there: Directly opposite Bolhao subway and along R. de Santa Catarina – an all-pedestrian. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7:30am to 6pm. Weekend 7:30am to 12:30pm and 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
