Your Guide to Budget Traveling in Tiburtina, Rome

Unlike our previous travels to Italy, we decided to stay in the neighbourhood of Tiburtina for a change.

Though Tiburtina is not much of a touristic area, Roma Tiburtina station is the second-largest railway station in Rome and serves the Tiburtina neighbourhood. Why stay here? Lodging is more affordable than central Rome, neighbourhood is less confronting and direct train from Roma Tiburtina to Mestre.

Getting to Roma Tiburtina

Regional trains from Fiucino Airport to Roma Tiburtina costs EUR8,00 per person with luggage.

Of course there are other methods of traveling to Roma Tiburtina. Our choice to avoid all the transport hopping is by the Regional train.

There are various locations where train tickets can be purchased from:

  • Self-service Ticket machine at the Airport arrival lounge (while collecting baggage) or Train station lobby
  • Ticketing counter at Train station lobby

Payment methods:

  • Credit Card
  • Cash

Free seating and there are no requirements to be in any specific carriage.

According to some rather eye-opening photos from 2021 on Google Earth, it seems that all around the area, construction crews were so busy that they forgot to leave a single patch of ground for us mere mortals to walk on! At this point, I’ve concluded that Google isn’t just smart; they’re practically the hall monitors of the internet, ensuring we all obey the rules like good little citizens!

Titina B&B

We chose Titina B&B for the night before heading to Mestre. The lodging is in a large apartment block next to Roma Tiburtina station. We booked a triple room with a private bathroom with flat-screen TV and small table and chair for dining. There is also a communal refrigerator and coffee-making machine in the hallway. The stay included an Italian-style breakfast served in-room, a unique experience for us.

About Titina B&B

  • The front door of the building is not always open. Need to inform staff what time to expect you.
  • Elevator is really small and does not stop on every floor.
  • Elevator is not on ground floor – need to walk half a floor up to access elevator.
  • B&B located on the 3rd floor of the building – enter the building and turn right at the inner courtyard to access the elevator A at the first few stairs of the staircase.
  • Affordable lodging minus all the frills – beds are comfortable, bathroom clean, breakfast beautiful
  • Amazing and friendly staff.

Our morning breakfast. Our host will serve breakfast to our room. The host is very accommodating. We had an early train, so they prepared our breakfast and sent it to our room early. I do not usually love croissants but those croissants were delicious.

Eating on a budget

Many cafes and shops were happily peddling their already-cooked creations, like bustling little food factories. Pizzas were going for about Eur5.00 each, so if you’re planning to feed a trio, brace yourself for a stomach-patting Eur15.00 for one meal—that’s right, one meal! But fear not, fellow budget travelers! Just because you’re counting your coins doesn’t mean you have to subsist on mere air and regret. Eat smart, savor the flavors, and splurge a bit on the essentials—after all, who wants to vacation while living off instant noodles? There is always supermarkets around.
