Holy Week in Zaragoza

Town officials worked tirelessly to prepare the City for the annual Holy Week processions and an inflow of visitors.

Holy Week began with Palm Sunday and ends with Good Friday.

During Holy Week in Zaragoza, more than 15,000 people from 23 Easter brotherhoods will participate in several processions throughout Zaragoza.

Note: The procession route and schedules can be obtained at the Zaragoza Tourist Office. Zaragoza Tourist Information office is now located at C. de Santiago, 22, Casco Antiguo, 50003 Zaragoza, Spain – 3 mins walk from the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar. The Tourism office opens daily from 10:00hrs to 20:00hrs. The brochures are all in Spainish but do not hesitate to ask for help from the awesome Customer Service officers at the Tourist Information centre.

I had the distinct privilege of observing this momentous religious and cultural event, characterized by the resounding sounds of drums during solemn marches and parades that feature religious images, along with floats adorned with intricately sculpted religious scenes known as “pasos.” The participants don traditional robes and conical hoods referred to as “capirotes.” Such an event is not an everyday occurrence; it is undoubtedly a remarkable experience.

What I really love about these processions is how it’s all about family—some women are either pushing strollers or carrying their little ones. Plus, you’ll even spot some of the drummers being young kids!

It’s pretty amazing to see the kids at this unique event, all disciplined and actually enjoying themselves—no tantrums in sight! They’re marching right along with their parents and friends, perfectly in sync with the beat of the drums. Women in black, traditional funeral-style attire, also participated.
