Sapporo

Direction signs from JR Sapporo Station to Sapporo Subway for Namboku Line can be quite overwhelming especially when there is also a luggage to drag along and our fellow commuters seem to be on a mission.

The pathways and tunnels linking Sapporo city’s JR Station to its Subway is like a city underground walkway and retail outlets under Sapporo’s main streets. Sounds pretty cool walking through hidden tunnels like secret agents in movies.

In our previous visit to City, Sapporo is one place that when it snows, the snow can pile up the sidewalks that there is not enough place to walk. I suppose the plan for underground walkways is to encourage residents to visit the malls often and in comfort from the chills of winter.

Tip: Sapporo station can be chaotic – JR Sapporo station is somewhat under the same roof as Sapporo subway that has 3 lines – Tozai Line, Toho Line and Namboku Line. If arranging to meet someone in Sapporo, avoid choosing Sapporo station as the meeting point. There are different exits and they are quite a walk. Click for Sapporo subway lines and stations.

Here’s something I found impressive. There was no visible lines drawn on the ground for human traffic to walk without bumping into one another. Yet, it appears that there was an unseen line which everyone seems to follow the flow without colliding into one another or coming into one another’s way. They are so polite and definitely have grown gracefully as a nation.
